Q & A WITH

DREWBOY & THE SAX ADDICTS

Tell us the magic ingredients of DATSA and how it came to be?

Drew: ‘DATSA’ started the moment I taught myself the guitar in grade 10 and started writing my own songs. I then just wrote and played solo as a hobby, as a way to release my creativeness and emotions, until I formed the band 2 years ago.

Highlights to date

Drew: Playing an acoustic duo gig at Australia Zoo to a 5,000 plus crowd and supporting Shannon Noll, Ash Grunwald, etc. And of course last year’s TGIG festival.

travel essentials when on tour?

Drew: We are probably the weirdest band to tour with. Everybody is so different in the band, but we all gel so well. For me, apart from the obvious (my guitar) it would probably be my diary, because I have a bit of OCD and a terrible memory haha.

If you weren’t a musician, producer or DJ, what would you be doing instead?

Drew: If I weren’t a musician, I would either still be a high voltage electrician/linesman out on the gas fields, or a property developer.

If you could give advice for aspiring artists out there, what would it be?

Drew: Work harder than everybody else. And stay humble. So many amazing artists out there that will never be discovered, just because they have no drive or business sense. And there is nothing worse than overconfidence or arrogance!

Who or what was your musical influence growing up and how did that influence you as an artist?

Drew: I had so many, very different, influences. The main ones being: Blink 182, The Offspring, James Taylor, Eminem, The Angels, Kid Cudi, John Williamson and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Random hey! Maybe that's why it's so hard to put my music into one genre haha.

If you could be a super hero or have a magic ability, what would it be and why?

Drew: My selfish answer is to fly! But I love helping people, so I'd probably choose to heal.

What is your impression of North Queensland and its emerging Festival scene?

Drew: I love it! We live in one of the most amazing parts of the world and it's grouse to see the festival scene growing here and everybody is digging it hard.

If you could time warp yourself to any point in history when would it be, who would you hang out with?

Drew: To be honest I love right now. Maybe I'd go back to the 90's and hang with some of those bands, or just hang with some of my friends and family that aren't here today.

What's your favourite comedy YouTube clip?

Drew: It would have to be, "The Big Lez Show – The Tripper Snipper". Check it out!
