Q & A WITH

GRETA STANLEY

Greta Stanley?…please share its origin

I was named after my grandma, her name was Margaret – I never met her as she passed away when my mum was just twelve years old, I think it’s a German name from memory but I’m not of a German background, it’s meaning is “Pearl”.

Highlights to date

Making an EP, playing with a band at GTM, making so many great friends through music, knowing my music has helped people, and just most recently recording a 14 track album!

Greta Stanley travel essentials when on tour?

- L-theanine, its like this stuff derived from green tea that calms anxiety and helps promote healthy sleep!
- A good read for the plane, I usually pick up a FRANKIE mag, and I’m reading the biography of Frida Kahlo at the moment.
- Snacks, all about the snacks. Some dark chocolate and veggie chips are my go to’s!
- a hat and sunglasses for disgusing my sleep deprived face after a long day/night.
- Olive leaf extract to prevent a cold! Cairns is so warm, so anywhere south is quite a change in temperature.

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing instead?

I’d like to have a market stall someday, selling hand-made clothes from recycled fabric, or something involving healthy food/organic local produce.I don’t really know what I’d be doing, probably the same as now, minus the music, so two day jobs ~ ~  be a pretty dull life.

If you could give advice for aspiring artists out there, what would it be?

Stay true to you -  trust your gut instinct cos it’s almost always right, surround yourself with people who you adore, and be conscious of when it’s time to take a step back and breathe. Don’t try write the next best hit or mimic you’re favourite ever artist, just write what you’re feeling and find your own sound, sometimes they end up being hits anyways, bonus.

Who or what was your musical influence growing up and how did that influence you as an artist?

My folks mostly listened to (from memory) Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Macy grey, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Cat Empire, John Butler, actually the list is pretty long, they had good taste. I went through a few questionable phases, Ne-yo, Jo-Jo, Anastasia was my idol when I was about seven, when I turned 13 or so it was more Missy Higgins, Dixie Chicks, Blink 182, I like all genres, still do! I guess it influenced me in a sense that I was inspired by all kinds of music, not just one thing in particular, I wrote little poems when I was young and terrible raps, then I moved onto playing guitar and finding my own kind of sound just through writing and writing and singing and singing and writing! I still don’t have a set sound/or genre but I suppose I do fall into one, I’d like to think I could just change it entirely if I wanted to though ~ there’s no rules it’s all about expression.

If you could be a super hero or have a magic ability, what would it be and why?

Teleporation would be ideal, I constantly find myself wanting to be in too many places at once.

If you could collaborate with any musician past or present who would it be?

King Krule, Jamie T, Soko. They’re my top three that come immediately to mind, if I had to choose one, Jamie T  - I’ve always loved his music, I remember the first song I heard was Sheila about eight or so years ago, and he’s never let me down since.

What is your impression of North Queensland and its emerging Festival scene?

It’s definitely taking steps in the right direction, there’s such a market for it up here – I think it’s great to have something for people to look forward to, there’s a lot of smaller regional towns surrounding Cairns too so to have these big events really draws people from everywhere, I think it will keep getting better too the more people go to these events and realise how great they are for both the attendee’s but also surrounding local businesses that benefit too. It’s also a chance for bigger artists to come to Cairns and see how beautiful it is up here, and hopefully encourage them to come back for touring / solo shows too!

If you could time warp yourself to any point in history when would it be and who would you hang out with?

I’d like to go back and be in the crowd at Woodstock!

What's your favourite comedy YouTube clip?

THIS ONE! it’s a talking dog… never gets old.
